Key Practices for a Successful Cloud Migration, CIO News, ET CIO

By Manish Dangwal

The cloud is increasingly becoming a critical component in an organization’s digital transformation journey, becoming the central platform as organizations move their workloads to the cloud. According to Gartner, end-user spending on public cloud services in India is expected to reach US$7.3 billion in 2022, a 29.6% increase from 2021. That’s a huge expense for a single service.

Organizations are adopting hybrid and multi-cloud deployments to avoid vendor lock-in and choose specific clouds for specific workloads. Because multi-cloud deployments provide resiliency and redundancy, the hybrid cloud option is viewed as a stepping stone to the cloud. A hybrid or multi-cloud approach is used to ensure compliance across different regions.

Key challenges when migrating workloads

With many cloud migrations, organizations often lack a clear business strategy for the transition. They also don’t understand the key dependencies and dependencies of applications being migrated to the cloud, leading to multiple performance issues. Failure to prioritize applications prior to migrating to the cloud or using the wrong cloud migration approach can result in increased costs. It is predicted that by 2024, 60% of infrastructure and operations (I&O) leaders will face public cloud cost overruns that will negatively impact their on-premises budgets.

Best practices for a seamless cloud migration

Before migrating to the cloud, organizations need to establish a baseline of applications to be moved, which can be prioritized based on their criticality or performance gain. Once the application inventory is determined, organizations must decide which type of cloud migration to choose. This approach can mean rehosting, rearchitecting, rebuilding or replacing. The type of cloud environment must then be selected – public, private or hybrid.

Other recommended best practices include:

Process Competence: The cloud transformation project consists of several critical steps including planning, execution and documentation required to take advantage of the availability of data in the cloud. In order to make their cloud transformation process a success, companies need to have expertise in all aspects and processes during the project lifecycle.

Compliance/Documentation: When migrating data to the cloud, organizations must follow government and industry regulations, as well as your company’s corporate policies. As data moves from one place to another, it’s important to be able to prove each step by documenting the details. A sound knowledge of what information is required by auditors helps to achieve compliance during migration.

Security: During the process of data extraction, data transformation and data ingestion, companies must ensure that their data is safe and secure by aligning themselves with the highest security standards. Security must be an integral part of every organization’s cloud strategy. With the speed at which digital transformation is happening, so is data breaches at the same level. It is paramount that infrastructure is built to be resilient so businesses can stay ahead of the curve.

Efficiency and stakeholder engagement: Data migration to the cloud is always a complex process and one of the most critical IT projects. To ensure that the project is completed efficiently, organizations must involve multiple parties – such as auditors, the network team, and IT teams – in the migration project and guide all stakeholders through the process.

Duration: During the migration project, one must focus on the successful outcomes that come from modernizing to the cloud, such as lower costs, increased reliability, and greater flexibility to innovate. In addition to just updating applications, the cloud offers another advantage in day-to-day management. Applications can be outsourced to experts, giving customers the opportunity to grow their business by reinvesting their budgets and talents elsewhere. In light of the Great Resignation, both training and adoption will most likely be ongoing rather than one-off initiatives. At the same time, getting users to take full advantage of new applications is crucial to maximize the return on your investment. Value is not created simply by completing application modernization, but by ensuring that the modernization process drives deeper adoption, helps streamline business processes, and creates real value for your organization.

partner choice: Choosing the best partner for migrating data to the cloud is an important step to consider. From process expertise to compliance to the latest processes and technology, a good partner can help your organization seamlessly move data and applications to the cloud.

After migration, organizations need a cloud governance model to continue to identify improvement opportunities. When used optimally, the cloud can be a transformational model to improve efficiency and productivity. Some of the steps mentioned above can be used as a guide for a seamless transition to the cloud.
