The Striding Towards the Intelligent World Summit at HUAWEI CONNECT 2022 ended successfully on September 22nd. David Wang, Huawei’s Executive Director of the Board and Chairman of the ICT Infrastructure Managing Board, delivered a keynote speech titled Embracing the 5.5G Era: Striding Towards the Intelligent World at the summit.
In the speech, he emphasized that 5.5G is an important milestone in our journey to a smart world and released Huawei’s latest series of smart world white papers. Wang also called on the ICT industry to coordinate efforts around eight facets of this vision. By working together to further define and refine the industry vision and standards for the 5.5G era, the industry will accelerate toward the 5.5G era and the intelligent world.
In the future, individuals, households and industries will have higher demands on the digital infrastructure.
For individuals, immersive services such as XR and holographic communications are maturing, and the connectivity experience is expected to increase from 1Gbps to 10Gbps. Mobile DOU will increase from today’s 15 GB to 100 GB. Latency and ubiquitous connectivity requirements will also increase.
For homes, the demands created by advanced services such as 24K 3D VR gaming and holographic education and meetings are leading to an all-fiber 10Gbps era.
For the industry, the digital transformation has now arrived in the fast lane. Industrial applications such as smart manufacturing and power grid dispatching are increasing diverse requirements for connections, quality and sensor technology, while at the same time triggering an explosive growth in the demand for computing power and storage.
Wang noted, “We must keep working hard if we hope to achieve an intelligent world. The 5.5G era is an important milestone on this journey – one we cannot afford to miss. In the 5.5G era, we will need ubiquitous 10Gbps.” Experience; intelligent and high-quality computing scheduling; highly autonomous L4 networks; Cloud Native 2.0 services for businesses and a 10x increase in computing effectiveness, storage and infrastructure energy efficiency.”
He further emphasized Huawei’s belief that it will need the support of customers, ecosystem partners, industry organizations, and academic institutions to further develop and strengthen digital infrastructure, thereby accelerating the advent of the 5.5G era and the intelligent world.
More specifically, he said that industry players need to come together to:
Promote allocation of more spectrum to accelerate industry development and explore new 5.5G use cases with greater commercial value;
Define the technical paths and standards for F5.5G;
Quickly reach consensus on development towards Net5.5G;
Define a profile for autonomous L4/L5 networks and promote uniform standards.
Building an open and diversified computer industry for shared success and redefining computer architecture;
Define a storage architecture that meets diversified computing needs;
Lay a cloud foundation for the intelligent world and cultivate a stronger ecosystem for the cloud service industry. and finally
Adopt a unified NCIe system to help industry save energy and reduce emissions with innovative ICT technologies and solutions.
Wang also published Huawei’s latest white paper series, entitled Striding Towards the Intelligent World. Guided by the next steps related to the above eight facets, these white papers examine both the opportunities and challenges that will arise for key ICT infrastructure domains from emerging business needs and technological developments. The white papers also outline key trends in these areas and specify actions the company recommends to the industry ahead of 2025.
Dang Wenshuan, Huawei’s Chief Strategy Architect, then took the stage to discuss the contents of the white papers in more detail. He emphasized two concepts that the company wants to promote on the way to 5.5G and eventually the intelligent world:
“ICT for Intelligence” which focuses on constant innovation and advancement in various ICT areas to improve key skills, and
“Intelligence for ICT”, which focuses on the intelligent and architectural innovation within the ICT industry itself, needed to tackle challenges such as increasingly complex O&M, ensuring user experience in diversified service scenarios and green development. Overcoming these challenges will help us make the most of existing and upcoming ICT core skills and lead us faster into the smart world.
