Focally introduces the world’s first full-color Micro-LED-based true AR glasses with a fully see-through display and USound MEMS speaker technology

Focally’s Universe AR glasses with state-of-the-art USound audio technology, optical display system and hardware that enables spatial computing.

New Delhi [India]September 27: USound, the leading supplier of loudspeakers for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for hearables and wearables, announces a collaboration with the Indian company Focally for the first generation of their Universe AR glasses.

Focally’s Universe AR glasses prototype is designed to explore next-generation assistive AR applications such as AR navigation, location-based applications, streaming video and audio, location-based gaming, AI applications and more. These smart glasses prototypes show the essential elements required for wearable AR devices, such as optical architecture, powerful sound system and real-time detection capabilities, integrated into an ergonomic and compact glasses device.

This first generation features a fully transparent, see-through waveguide with a 30 degree FOV combined with the world’s smallest and brightest micro-LED full-color display engine. The goggles integrate USound’s patented two-way audio system with MEMS tweeters and electrodynamic woofers, and dual microphones for noise-cancelling and spatial audio.

This version of the device features a unique computing architecture to take real-time on-board measurements from sensors such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers, ambient conditions, gas composition and IR, and then wirelessly perform application-specific calculations on other powerful computing platforms such as smartphones to reduce power consumption.

Focally is already working on its second generation prototype with image processing functions and advanced calculation functions. A streamlined computing platform will be launched later in 2023 for developers and early enthusiasts.

With its advanced MEMS speaker based sound solution, USound enables unprecedented opportunities for industrial and product design to solve the challenges of many modern audio devices. Compared to competing speakers used in earbuds, TWS, headphones, smartphones, VR/AR glasses, wearables and hearing aids, USound MEMS speakers take up up to 50% less space and consume 80% less power and offer a wider frequency range per unit area.

“Once again, it shows how our compact MEMS speaker-based audio solutions enable manufacturers to add more features to hearing aids and wearables to enhance the user experience,” said Andrea Rusconi, CTO and co-founder of USound.

“We’re excited to present our first demonstration of how we’re making contextual augmented reality close and accessible by integrating cutting-edge technologies into an acceptable and portable form factor. Stay tuned for exciting offers,” said Sagar Madliyavar, Focally CEO and Founder.

Focally is one of several companies that will benefit from USound’s MEMS-based audio solutions and will launch wearables and hearables in 2022 and by 2023.
